It’s hard to believe the holiday season is right around the corner, and with so much to do between now and then, scheduling dental checkups may be pretty far down the list. But did you know that many dental benefits reset at the end of the year?

Making a fall checklist now could help you maximize your coverage before the new year.

Dental Benefits Fall Checklist

Most dental insurance policies begin coverage on January 1, but the coverage ends on December 31 before renewing the next year. That means if you don’t take advantage of the preventive benefits you or your employer pay for, you could lose them.

Here are some things you can do between now and the end of the year:

  • Check with your insurance provider to see what your remaining balance is; most plans have an annual maximum. If you haven’t reached it yet, now would be a good time to schedule any necessary treatment.
  • Verify your deductible; this is what you must pay before your insurance company begins to pay. If you find out you’ve met that amount for 2026, any treatments you receive will be less expensive before December 31.
  • Check with our office to see if you’ve taken advantage of two preventive exams and cleanings; most dental insurance plans cover 100% of two preventive visits each year. You do need to make sure it has been at least six months since your last cleaning. Because we tend to be busy at the end of the year, please get in touch with our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.
  • If you need numerous treatments, consider splitting the treatment costs. For example, you could use the remaining annual maximum for this year in November or December, then schedule the rest of the treatments next year.
